The white flowers have a pinkish tinge when not opened and the body tapers slightly. They are solitary and emerge on red stalks in the leaf axils.

Opened flowers lose some of their pinkishness. The constricted small opening has five petals that recurved back on themselves. Their overall shape of the flowers differs slightly from those of Cowberry which do not taper and from Prickly Heath (a shrub, rather than a short under-shrub) which are more bulbous.

Leaves bronze and redden in strong sunlight. Berries red.

More of a garden plant from America, used as a ground-cover plant in the UK because it will spread. Can naturalise itself in woodland areas. The fruit is berry-like, long-lasting, red and edible, tasting of mint - the dry capsule within is surrounded by a fleshy calyx and is between 6-9mm across. Checkerberry is a calcifuge growing in acidic soils in pinewood or hardwood forests, but fruiting only in sunny positions.

Checkerberry has dozens of common names, but one of them, Partridge Berry, usually refers to a differing ground-covering plant Mitchella repens, which is not native to the UK.
