The stems (aka culms) are up to 1.5m long. The stems can be branched (not on this specimen) and even branched yet again.

The leaves are usually between 1 to 3cm wide but can be as wide as 8cm!

The spikelets can have long awns (up to 5cm) or much a shorter long-acuminate [best seen lower right].

The inflorescence is up to 20cm long and usually with a strong purplish tinge as here. These are the fruits; the lowest on each spike of which is usually sterile.

The fruits are flattened-oval in shape with some grooves and a smattering of hairs directed upwardy. The lower lemma often has an awn (a 'thin bristle') which on Cockspur is long: up to 5cm.

The leaves are mostly over 1cm wide up to 3cm, but can be up to 8cm wide! The photographer is probably drawing our eye to some special identifying feature near his finger.


There are three other Echinochloas in the same genus, all called millets: Japanese Millet (Echinochloa esculenta), Shama Millet (Echinochloa colona) and White Millet (Echinochloa frumentacea),
