Wirral Horsetail is the hybrid between Branched Horsetail(Equisetum ramosissimum) and Variegated Horsetail (Equisetum variegatum) and therefore has characteristics intermediate between these two. It is growing on sand-dunes. |

It can have branches, or not, most of these specimens lack branches. |

One of its parents, Branched Horsetail, grows up to 1m whereas the other Variegated Horsetail up to 40cm (limit 80cm) but often less than 20cm. Wirral Horsetail can be any height between these two. |

Branched Horsetailcan have 7-20 rounded stem ridges whilst Variegated Horsetail 4-10 2-angled ridges. Therefore Wirral Horseshoe will probably have anywhere between these two number of stem ridges which are rounded or angled or anywhere inbetween... |

No relation to : Horse-radish (Armoracia rusticana) , Horse-Chestnut, Horseshoe Vetch (Hippocrepis comosa) nor to Wirral Horseshoe was first found in Anglesea but has got its common name from being found on the Wirral in West Kirby.
