Grows up to 60cm high, with but a few widely-separated flowers in the flower-spike. Not native to the UK! Superficially similar to Southern Marsh Orchid in that the flower spike is lax, however the lip, although wide, is swept back giving it a narrow appearance from the front, and the spur is behind the flower is long and straight.

However, you are un-likely to mistake these for Southern Marsh Orchid in the field; for Loose-flowered Orchid has no presence in the UK apart from in the grounds of Wakenhurst Place, where these photographs were taken (unless, of course, you are in Wakenhurst Place, and think these are Southern Marsh Orchid...)

Has stripes in the 'wings' like Green-Winged Orchid, but the wings are purple/white with no hint of green. The lip has two rounded notches, effectively dividing it up into three 'lobes'. The lip is wrinkled slightly especially at the edges and back.

Some similarities to : Southern Marsh Orchid - see captions above.

Superficial resemblance to : the far more common Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula) which also exhibits widely-spaced purple flowers, but the basal leaves usually have dark blotches.

Hybridises with : Green-Winged Orchid (Anacamptis morio) to produce Anacamptis × alata, but which seems to have never been found anywhere in the UK over the last 80 years, apart from in the Shetland Islands before 1986 (according to the BSBI website).

It is extant Europe and Asia as well as nearer home in the Normandy and Brittany areas of France, and also masses in the Channel Islands of the UK where it is called 'Jersey Orchid'.

It is found in wet meadows but only those in alkaline soils.
