It also differs from Jointed Rush in having smaller tepals (aka petals) which are between 1.5mm to 2.7mm and coloured a mid to dark-brown (c.f. tepals of Jointed Rush which are 2.3 to 3.5mm which are dark-brown to blackish). It also has longer rhizomes than Jointed Rush - but you may have to dig both up for comparison... |

The tepals taper to a long tip (whereas the outer tepals of Jointed Rush are acute (sharply pointed but the inner tepals between acute and sub-acute). |

Hybridizes with : Jointed Rush (Juncus articulatus) to produce Juncus × surrejanus which is commoner than either parent in some places and intermediate in both the shape and size of the tepals. It also hybridizes with Bulbous Rush (Juncus bulbosus) to produce J. acutiflorus × J. bulbosus, which has no common name - mainly because it is very rare - once found in just two places: MW Yorkshire and Westmorland! Some similarities to : many other Rushes (Juncus species)! Wanted : photos of the flowers with stamens.
