The leaves, 2mm wide, are shaped like roof gutters: half-round channels - or in-rolled, if you like.

The stems are not straight, but bend over, usually much more pronounced than in this specimen and are between a very short 2cm long to 18cm, mostly round and stiff.

The inflorescence at the tip is compact, between 0.5 to 1.5cm long. The topmost spikelet is male, the lower ones usually female. The glumes of the female florets are 3 to 4mm long and broad-oval in shape.

With the gutters of the leaf channels usually being face-upwards one might be tempted to think that it is attempting to gather rain and channel it to the centre of the plant.

The fruits are between 4 to 5mm long, ovoidal, gradually turning from fawn to dark brown when ripe. The beak is 1mm long and not straight (well, it's not straight here, but is in the drawings in books).

Found (only?) in the British Isles - in North Lancs and Northumberland up right up to Northern Scotland and Shetland, the latter two where it is more abundant. It is a quite rare [RR].

Habitat is damp sandy places, sand dunes, and on the coasts of Northern Britain up to the Cheviots in Scotland, mostly Northern Scotland. The 'curved' part of its common name probably applies to the way that the stem holding the inflorescence is bent over quite a bit and not to the curved nature of the leaves (most leaves of plants have some curvature or kink).
