The flower stalks are stiff, triangular in cross-section with acute angles. It feels rough nearer the top. The inflorescence at the top consists of a compact small group of florets in several oval-heads, hence the 'oval' in the common name. |

It grows in compact tufts to 90cm high, with the usual minimum being 40cm. The underground rhizomes are very short with the roots being purple-brown or pale-purple-brown and often slightly curved lower down. |

The book does show a bit of a silvery sheen to parts of the fruit, so one presumes the silveriness on the specimens is a part of the florets properties and maybe a good identifying feature(?) - there cannot be many other sedges with silvery spikelets. |

The female glumes, not discernible individually in these photos, are unusual in being oval over 2/3rd their length culminating in a pointed tip without the usual S-shape at the top reminiscent of fountain-pen nibs - i.e. the curve is monotonic and with the tip having a subtended angle of c. 60°. Another identifying feature! |
The beak of the fruit (not shown) is between 1 to 1.5mm long with the whole capsule being between 3.8 to 5mm long. It has wings.
