Smaller than the otherwise very similar Maidenhair Spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes).

The most distinguishing difference from Maidenhair Spleenwort is that the mid-rib supporting the leaflets is a concolorous green rather than brown to blackish. In fact, the leaf-stalks, mid-rib and the upper part of the main stalk is green. The individual leaflets (pinnae) are also differ in shape and form from those of Maidenhair Spleenwort.

It is more often found in the west or the north of the UK in damp places on walls, rocks, upland rock-crevices and on basic rocks (usually limestone) in Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacoms, the Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria and in Scotland.
