Can be either decumbent or ascending: both here. It grows to 40 or 50cm long and can also take root at any nodes on the ground - which it often does with the lower nodes.

The anthers, which can be yellow or purple (but here fawn coloured) are the obtrusions on thin white filaments) are between 0.8 to 2mm long.

The glumes are obtuse (aka rounded at the top)


Hybridizes with :

  • Meadow Foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis) to produce Alopecurus × brachstylus which is usually very sterile and is to be found scattered about with both parents throughout Britain.

It is native and is common throughout the British Isles occurring in marshes, damp meadows, beside ponds or ditches - much the same habitats as Meadow Foxtail
